What is plantar fasciitis (heel spur)?
Plantar fasciitis is an irritation or inflammation of the tissue band under the foot — the plantar fascia — which runs from the heel bone to the toes. The condition is commonly called a "heel spur" in everyday speech, although a true heel spur is technically a bony growth on the heel bone visible on an X-ray. The two terms are often confused because the pain is felt in the same place and the symptoms are similar.
The most characteristic symptom is a stabbing pain under the heel, typically worst with the first steps in the morning or after sitting for a long time, and which can return after standing or walking for extended periods.
How does massage help with plantar fasciitis?
Massage treatment for plantar fasciitis works in several ways:
- Releases tight calf muscles: Tension in the lower leg often pulls on the plantar fascia and worsens the pain under the heel
- Direct treatment of the sole: Deep tissue massage of the plantar fascia itself releases tension and tender points
- Improved blood flow: Supports healing in the affected tissue
- Increased mobility: Makes it easier to move the foot and ankle without pain
- Reflex zone therapy: Complements the direct treatment and supports relaxation throughout the foot
Our approach to plantar fasciitis treatment
At Massage Musicon, Keld Høfler treats plantar fasciitis with a targeted combination of deep tissue massage of the lower leg and foot, stretching, and reflex zone therapy. Keld doesn't just work on the exact point of pain under the heel, but looks at the whole chain from calf to sole, since tight calf muscles are often a contributing cause of the problem.
Several of our clients have experienced a noticeable difference in daily life after treatment — including less pain with the first steps in the morning and improved mobility in the foot.

Frequently asked questions about plantar fasciitis (heel spur)
Is a heel spur the same as plantar fasciitis?
Not quite. "Heel spur" is often used in everyday language for the pain, but technically refers to a bony growth on the heel bone. What actually causes the pain in most cases is plantar fasciitis — an irritation of the tissue band under the foot. Many people with heel pain don't have a physical bone spur at all.
Can massage help with plantar fasciitis?
Yes. Deep tissue massage of the lower leg and foot, combined with stretching and reflex zone therapy, can relieve the pain and improve mobility. Several of our clients have experienced a clear difference in daily life.
What are the symptoms?
A stabbing pain under the heel or in the sole of the foot, typically worst with the first steps in the morning or after sitting for a long time.
How many treatments will I need?
It depends on how long the symptoms have been present. Many clients notice a difference after just a few treatments, while longer-standing issues may require a short programme with regular sessions.
